Little Letter Learning - Q

Our 19th letter! Totally crazy. We are cruising now, she knows quite a few without learning them but this one was definitely not one of them. We took a thorough week with this one and did all three days because it is just an odd letter! Just not common, so it was a little bit of a challenge to teach her the sound since it's always with U but she hadn't learned U yet and I did not want to confuse her...I feel like this one could be hard to teach for reading!

Shapes: quadrilateral - but is anyone's 3 year old ready for that? Mine was not!

Actions: be quiet, act like a queen

Books:

  • Quick, Quack, Quick - Marsha Arnold
    • I really enjoyed this book! Quack just does not keep up with everyone else and Mama is constantly having to prod him...mamas? Anyone relate? Anyway, he gets left behind and has to really seek them out JUST in time to thwart and accident! Thank goodness Quack is not always quick!
  • The Quiltmaker's Gift - Jeff Brumbeau
    • This is a very long story, but very good! The king is very greedy and requires many gifts to be brought to him, but the one thing he wants is only given to people who are poor and needy, to get it he has to exchange all he has. I really enjoyed this book, we were also reading a Sommer book with the same idea going on in it - to be happy you have to let go of selfishness and greed!
  • If I Were Queen of the World - Fred Hiatt
    • I absolutely love this book. When I was pregnant with my daughter there was one specific song that just brought me to tears every single time, every song about a little girl made me just cry (keep in mind, I did not know what gender my baby was). Now with brother, I also did not know, and this was the book that made me cry. If the little girl in this book were queen of the world, she has a whole laundry list of things she would do...BUT, she would make sure to take care of her brother in the process. It is such a sweet little book and I see my girl living it. She loves her baby brother so much, she includes him and takes care of him any chance she gets, one of my common phrases is "I am the mama, I can handle it, do not parent your brother" but she is usually not doing it out of a control issue, it is normally out of a desire to keep him safe. This book is terribly sweet! We love it!
  • Giggle, Giggle, Quack - Doreen Cronin
    • Much better than "Click, Clack, Moo" and I love it! I found it to be super entertaining and sweet, we have enjoyed it so much. Farmer Brown leaves the farm for a little while and guess who causes some problems? That's right, the duck. As usual! It is a fun little book. I would highly recommend it!
  • Little Quack - Lauren Thompson
    • Quack is one of five ducklings, they are all scared to jump in! It is a scary thing, but Mama keeps encouraging him to do it and finally he takes the leap...after the rest of his siblings. This is also a really good little counting book if you are still working on numbers, delves a little into addition if you are that far, we are not!
  • Who Says Quack?
    • This was from the Imagination Library and it is great for little tiny ones, but also has the word "Quack" in it so many times! I loves this for littles learning animal sounds, but it is cute all the time!
